By any measure, SBCC graduate Leslie Marin is a success story. She was the first in her family to go to college, and was able to do so because of the SBCC Promise. With all fees, books, and supplies at SBCC covered for two years, she was able to make the commitment to attend full-time with plans to transfer to a four-year university. Without the Promise, Leslie said, “I wouldn’t have been able to go to college right after high school; I would have had to take a couple of semesters off to pay for tuition and supplies.” She stresses that the SBCC Promise “took a huge financial burden off my shoulders and my parents’ shoulders.”

In addition to excelling in her classes, Leslie participated in campus clubs and activities, and served as a peer mentor in EOPS (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services). She graduated in 2019 with four associate degrees, was the student commencement speaker at her graduation ceremony, and transferred to UC Santa Barbara with a 3.7 GPA and a full-ride scholarship – congrats, Leslie!
